Buck The Trend: Horseman's Mental Health Summit Recap
I was privileged to be asked to participate in the inaugural Buck The Trend: Horseman's Mental Health Summit. Mental health struggles in the ranching/training/veterinary/agricultural communities is a dirty little secret. In truth these communities have some of the highest suicide rates, the highest in the case of veterinarians. I'm ok with having this talk and being public about my life and things I have seen. Please check out this video and if you feel the pull, help in whatever way you can. We're trying to put on more of these in the future with the ultimate goal of helping as many as we can, by making it ok to talk about your struggles and seek the help.
If you'd like to donate, or help...

    It is so obvious you know nothing about bits except what you have been told or read you have not experienced them or you would know all Cowboys want their bits and their Spurs to rust out they do not want you look like a damn team roper with stainless steel bits there is so much more to this than what you are talking about you know absolutely nothing I doubt very seriously you are a trainer I've been training horses for 40 years and there's a reason that bit makers use metal that rusts out that they do not mold it out of stainless steel metal like these so-called handmade bits like balding they really are not handmade bits you could not buy a really good handmade bit for $250 or $150 I know so little and you're so aggravating just to listen to I need to write this s*** down so you can read it off a teleprompter or something like Joe Biden it's aggravating just to listen to you talk because you don't know most of what you're talking about and my Lord you know nothing about bits

    What are the advantages/disadvantages of using a rope halter versus a strap halter? Because I honestly don’t really like using rope halters and I would like to understand why some people prefer them.

    • @DanielDauphin
      @DanielDauphin 2 месяца назад

      They just are softer in rope halters. Horses are far, far more likely to push into and not respect the 1" nylon web halters. I certainly won't say that you "must" use these, or that they are the best for every situation. I'd use a web halter with no problem when hauling horses in trailers and so forth. But if one is being worked on the ground, or is being asked to soften and yield, the rope halter is simply the better tool for that job.

    Lots of negativity, not much that was helpful to me. I ride a simple bitless rig and my mare seems to like it quite well. I am not a pro, I am just some guy who rides for pleasure. Consider taking a more positive point of view that can actually help less experienced folks and perhaps your youtoob numbers will go up.

    Can you please make sure we are clear on difference between a correction bit (which I have used) and a 1" port Bob Avila swivel shank bit (which I also use), relative to which will be more happy for the horse? I was told the latter is best (especially for 2-handed riders) because each side of the bit operates independently, which is not the case with a correction bit. Please advise. Thank you!

    • @DanielDauphin
      @DanielDauphin 6 месяцев назад

      Bob Avila has a cheek design that will have a particular balance/neutral position and is a swivel cheek design. His line of bits has different mouthpieces though, including correction bits. All correction bits have swivel cheeks, so they all rotate independently on that axis. It's the correction mouthpiece's particular articulation/swivel points that make it so the cheeks rotate together when pulled back. So, I'd have to see the specific mouthpiece of the BA bit to answer the question. You can send me a pic through my website if you want.

      Couldn't find where to upload a photo, but mine is a Partrade correction bit. I bought it from a well-known trainer in Acampo, CA. It is balanced with shanks down. Can you recommend a particular maker for a correction bit? @@DanielDauphin

    • @DanielDauphin
      @DanielDauphin 6 месяцев назад

      @@laurielord5590 If you want to send me a picture, you'll have to do that via email, or facebook, or instagram. I will say here that it's very important to my message that I remain unbiased and impartial, so I never publicly recommend or endorse any particular makers/manufacturers. I will say that most of the ones making bits these days make bits of reasonable functionality and quality, as long as you've selected a design that's meant to work well in a horse's mouth, as opposed to those designs that are meant to look cool and shiny on a salesroom floor. All of those big makers have designs that are simply meant to look cool and get sold. Showing people the difference is a big part of what I do.

  • @lisatsmith1
    @lisatsmith1 7 месяцев назад

    That looks so perfectly easy. When you're 5'2" (120lbs) and your horse is 15 hands, it's just not that simple being that my stirrups are several notches higher than a 6'+ person's stirrup adjustment would be. I'm in shape and flexible. But I can't place my foot in the stirrup, reach to crab mane and still have enough weight on the ground for the spring-step to hoist myself on up...eSPecially if I've adjusted myself to get a handful of mane first, then I'm too far stretched out (or uP) to get my foot in the stirrup, I'm dangling! What happens is I'm not mounting, I climbing to get on...and the saddle must be tight. What I've learned from your very informative video is to loosen the saddle and welcome the mounting block!! Thank you @danieldauphin for this!! 👍😃

    Thank you for sharing this. I have been riding my whole life and was never taught to mount properly. I did notice that you are a tall man. I'm a short woman and have trouble getting on my horse because my stirrups are higher. What do you think about the stirrup extension as an aide for short or older people who are not as agile.

    • @DanielDauphin
      @DanielDauphin 9 месяцев назад

      As that will keep your weight on one side of the horse for a prolonged time, I would keep something like that for unavoidable back country type use. If there's a vertical challenge in the mix, I'd simply set things up so that there was a mounting block, stairs, fender of a trailer, log, etc. around to use as much as possible. Wear and tear on your horse's back is a real thing. No reason to make it harder than it needs to be. FWIW, I'm not quite 6 feet tall and this horse is 15.0 hands. The camera angle makes it look more favorable than it is. If I were mounting a 17 hand horse, I'd use a mounting block.

      @@darrenjames3415 I'd certainly agree on lowering the bit. On the WTP bits, I can't say that I have used one. I'd not be a fan of the metallurgy in that bit, or most of the more English styles of bits. If memory serves, those were designed for racehorsese with severe bit issues and I could certainly see them being used in that capacity. Beyond that though, I'd prefer to keep it simpler, and with sweet iron and copper over any highly polished metal for sure.
